Tarragona. Costa Dorada. Spain

Tarragona is a port city located in northeast Spain on the Costa Daurada by the Mediterranean Sea. It is called Costa Dorada, for the golden sands of its beaches.

One of the tourist attractions of Costa Dorada is the PortAventura World leisure complex.

Founded before the 5th century BC. The Roman ruins of Tarraco have been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Part of the bases of large Cyclopean walls near the Barracks of Pilate are thought to pre-date the Romans. The building just mentioned, a prison in the 19th century, is said to have been the palace of Augustus. The second century Tarragona Amphitheater near the seashore was extensively used as a quarry after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, and but few vestiges of it now remain.

Places such as several small villages or places like San Carlos de la Rápita can be found all along the coast, with one of the best fishing ports in this entire coastal sector. Inland, the walled town of Montblanch and the Monastery of Poblet stand out, where various kings of the Crown of Aragon lie.

Tarragona counts with a number of small bars, restaurants, and cafes serving tapas and sandwiches, and local seafood and Catalan dishes like “pa amb tomàquet” or “neules i torrons”. Many such outlets are found in the historic center, including those at the Plaça de la Font, Plaça del Rei and Plaça del Fòrum. The neighborhood of El Serrallo, at the harbor, specializes in seafood cuisine.

Between 1903 and 1989 the French liqueur made by the Carthusian Monks, Chartreuse, was distilled in Tarragona, following the monks’ expulsion from France.

Tarragona is home to a large port, hosting numerous cruises, which makes Tarragona a very visited city.

The Costa Dorada has a total of 81 kilometers of coastline that are distributed in up to sixty beaches, many of them have as common denominator the fine golden sand and a shallow access in the interior of the sea.

In addition, the Costa Dorada offers numerous activities managed from the Nautical Station or private companies that offer from kayaking tours, through the discovery of the sea with snorkeling, fishing and gastronomy.

The Costa Dorada has an important offer of leisure and family tourism. The PortAventura World amusement park becomes the main attraction and is a reference among the leisure spaces in the province.

The excellent weather, with warm summers and mild winters, makes the Costa Dorada also, throughout the twelve months of the year, the ideal place to practice and program sports activities. In fact, there are numerous municipalities that offer an important network of facilities. In this sense, the offer of quality golf courses is at the level of the most demanding players.

The first golf course in the Camp de Tarragona region was the Costa Dorada Golf Club which, with 55 hectares of playing area, opened its doors in 1983.

Currently, the Costa Dorada has seven golf courses, as well as several pitch and putt. The facilities of the fields, such as Lumine Mediterranean Beach and Golf Community, have been designed by prestigious firms such as Greg Norman, Green Project or Robert Trent Jones Jr.
