The cradle of “Fado” in Lisbon.

According to statistics, Lisbon is the third most hospitable city in the world, and hides an open secret. This secret is called Barrio de la Moreira, the true cradle of “fado”, a music genre that can be traced to the 1820s, accompanied by the «viola» and the Portuguese guitar.

And we say that it is an open secret because although the Lisbon people know well what Mouraria means for the living history of the city, most travelers pass by this neighborhood, which is, however, an essential visit.

The glory is taken by its closer neighborhood of Alfama and few tourist routes overlook this place where tourism has barely penetrated.

Among the walls of the oldest and most traditional neighborhood of Lisbon, a woman from Mouraria, Severa, sang her first verses seeking to attract customers with melodies full of nostalgia that would end up being the germ of the quintessential Portuguese national song: Fado .

Lisbon was also an important route of maritime merchants, compared in its time with Venice. Portugal bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, open door to important commercial exchanges with the New World, gives it a very special character. Lisbon breathes, and so tell the stories of “fado”, that mixture of cultures that remains to this day.
