The best natural landscapes of Galicia

Galicia is magical. Land, water and air combine here in such a way that landscapes never disappoint the traveller. Whatever season of the year you choose to visit it, you will fall in love. However, the fame of many of its corners overshadows others that deserve equally to be valued as visited. Find here some of the best natural landscapes of Galicia that you might not know.

O Fuciño do Porco 

In O Vicedo (Lugo) is Punta Socastro. Its nickname is O Fuciño do Porco because of its similarity to the snout of a pig. A wooden walkway that was built a few years ago to travel these cliffs. The walkway has made the place famous, thanks to the dissemination of travellers’ photographs through social networks. From this natural enclave, you can see spectacular views of the entire coast of Lugo. That alone entitles it to open our list ob best natural landscapes of Galicia.

Colon´s Forest

When we talk about sequoias, we think of the United States. However, in Galicia, we have a redwood forest that is still a great unknown. And a very good candidate to be part of a list of best natural landscapes of Galicia. The Colon Forest or Bosque das Sequoias is considered the largest sequoia forest in Europe. You can find it on Mount Castrove, in Poio (Pontevedra). It was born in the nineties when some 500 redwoods were planted to commemorate the fifth centenary of the trip of Christopher Columbus. It was a gift from the United States Congress.

Areoso Islet

The Areoso islet looks just like the Caribbean. With crystalline waters and a reef that surrounds it, this islet is one of the jewels of the Rías Baixas. It is also one of the best natural landscapes of Galicia. It is in A Illa de Arousa (Pontevedra) and has just under nine hectares of fine sand. As if that were not enough, in the highest point of the islet you can find remains of a dolmen. A unique place on the Galician land.

Caneiro da Tolda

The caneiros or pesqueiras are river dykes. Men built them in antiquity to facilitate fishing, taking advantage of the natural rocks of the river. The image of Caneiro de Tolda (Lugo) sends us back to distant lands and times. It is located near the confluence of the Rato river with the Miño.

Playa de los cristales (Crystal Beach)

There are very few beaches in the world formed by crystals. One of them is in Laxe (A Coruña). The Beach of the Crystals (Praia dos Cristais) was formed due to an accident. An old landfill existed in the area. People usually disposed of crystals, such as colour bottles, there. The scourge of the tides and the rocks turned all those waste materials into a floor of small pebbles of polished glass, over the years, which makes this beach one of the attractions of the region and one of the most strange and best natural landscapes in Galicia. Or not so natural, actually.
