Sierra Nevada. The Ceiling of Spain

Sierra Nevada is a mountain range in the region of Andalucia, close to Granada in Spain. It contains the highest point of continental Spain and the third highest in Europe (after the Caucasus Mountains and the Alps): Mulhacén, at 3,479 meters (11,414 ft) above sea level. That is why is called “the celiling of Spain”.

It is a popular tourist destination, as its high peaks make skiing possible in one of Europe’s most southerly ski resorts, in an area along the Mediterranean Sea predominantly known for its warm temperatures and abundant sunshine. At its foothills is found the city of Granada. (see our monographic post about Granada).

Parts of the range have been included in the Sierra Nevada National Park. The range has also been declared a biosphere reserve. The Sierra Nevada Observatory and the IRAM radiotelescope are located on the northern slopes at an elevation of 2,800 meters (9,200 ft).

The ski resort of Sierra Nevada is equipped with 131 tracks (110 Kms.); Slides for sliding with tires (tubing); Ski schools; Night skiing; Dream Land (snow playground) with 3 transport mats, one of them covered; Chairlifts, Ski lifts, Cable cars, Hotels and Restaurants organizing all kinds of entertainment to relax after a day of skiing.

And there are still more surprises:

In Sierra Nevada a very powerful snow park awaits you. The music will take you directly to the Loma de Dílar to enjoy the Sulayr Superpark, a dream space for snowboarders and freestyle skiers. Why Sulayr?

Many centuries ago, when the Arabs first saw Sierra Nevada, they named it Mount Sulayr, the Mount of the Sun. What they could never imagine is that they were also baptizing one of the best parks in Europe.

In 2017 hosted most of the World Snowboard and Freestyle Ski Championships Competitions.

CYCLE EUROPE’S HIGHEST PAVED ROAD. Sierra Nevada is home to Europe’s highest paved road – a zigzagging stretch of tarmac that takes you to within striking distance of Veleta’s summit. Cycling it is a great experience: you begin at Hoya de la Mora and continue after the asphalt disappears at 3,300 meters. The road reaches a dead end at 3,380 meters, leaving you to trek the remaining 16 meters to the top of Veleta peak.

Lovely villages in the way up to Sierra Nevada, like Alpujarra. This charming, friendly town is famous for its hams (jamones), as the dry air is perfect for the curing process – so be sure to order some as a tapa with a cold beer. Trevelez is also a great start-and-finish point for tackling Mulhacén.
