Mérida is the capital of the region of Extremadura and is one of the most important cities of the old Roman Empire. The Roman legacy can be traced back at many places in the city, which has a whole collection of ancient artefacts and monuments, starting with the Roman Theatre, built in the first century B.C. Nearby the next Roman heritage can be found, an impressive Amphitheatre where the Gladiators used to fight. The city still uses those historical places for events like the Mérida Classical Theatre Festival. Several museums show interesting historical facts about this marvelous city and all its past. Visiting Mérida is like travelling back in time…
Region: Extremadura
The region of Extremadura is famous for its wide nature, perfect for activities like hiking or bird watching. The climate is favorable for these activities with mild winters and warm summers, due to its location just north of Andalusia and sharing the complete western border with Portugal, which at the same time gives the area a Mediterranean as well as Atlantic maritime touch. Several National Parks for example along the riverbeds of the rivers Tajo and Guadiana, or the beautiful mountain ranges are just examples for the vast and fertile nature of Extremadura
