24. June 2015
The 24th of June is a holiday in Barcelona, which is well needed after the night of the Sant Joan before. This festivity is also called the ‘night of the fire’, due to its many fireworks set off the whole night in the entire city. It is the shortest night of the year because of the Solstice, which is celebrated on this night and day. A good and popular place to watch the firework is the beach, where the bars and restaurants usually provide extra tables. The people of Barcelona start this night with a long and big dinner, preparing themselves for a long night out. Furthermore all the bakeries will provide a certain pastry for this day called ‘Coque’, a bread-like cake with sweet or savoury taste. What they all have in common is the ingredient anise, which gives it a special flavour.
